- although this is an everyday Scots word for a lump of something, it takes on a more specific meaning in place-names, where it usually refers to a bare hill with a rounded top. Scottish examples include Deuchrie Dod and Wester Dod in the Lammermuir Hills though there are several plain old Dod Hills in the Borders.
