Chapter intro

Deel

- also found with the spelling dale, as in English, this term is derived from Old English dæl and its Old Norse cousin dalr, which both mean 'valley'. In Shetland, the word is usually dale, but sometimes it becomes daal, as in the compound daalamist, mist which gathers in valleys or on low-lying water, usually appearing at night and disappearing when the sun rises. Names containing dale, such as Lauderdale and Teviotdale in the Borders, can refer to wide areas of land bordering rivers.
