- this is one of the words that has become associated with the romantic view of traditional Scotland, as it refers to the old-style dwelling made up of two rooms, the but and the ben. The but is the kitchen or outer room, while the ben is the 'good' room, the inner room. The association of the but-n-ben with couthy Scottish culture was very effectively turned on its head in Matthew Fitt's science fiction novel, But n Ben A-Go-Go (2000).
