- derived from Old Norse bryggja, brig is the cousin of English bridge, which derives from Old English brycg. A famous Scottish brig is the Brig o' Doon, which (unsurprisingly) crosses the river Doon in Ayrshire and is immortalised in Robert Burns' tale of Tam o Shanter. Unlike Brigadoon, tourists can visit it all year round.
