Chapter intro

Ben

Scotland's bens and glens are well known for their beauty. Scots ben is derived from Gaelic beann, found in the names of such major Scottish mountains as Ben Cruachan, Ben Lomond and Ben Nevis. Binns in West Lothian is also derived from a form of the same Gaelic word. This ben is of course different from the ben of a but-and-ben, the traditional Scottish two-roomed house, where the ben was the inner or 'best' room.
