Bastile

- often found in the form bastle, this term for a strong stone tower or fortress occurs in such names as Bastleridge and Kelloe Bastle in Berwickshire and is derived from Old French bastile 'a building'. As noted by the Statistical Account of Scotland for Berwickshire (1791-99),

The last mentioned vestige of feudal antiquity was that of the bastiles ... These edifices not only served the purposes of prisons, but... constituted a chain of fortresses, running... from almost the one end of the county to the other.
