Chapter intro

Aber

- instantly recognisable as the first component of such names as Aberdeen and Aberfeldy, aber, 'confluence, river-mouth' is the P-Celtic equivalent of the Gaelic word inbhear, which appears in Scottish place-names in the form inver. Because of its northern distribution, aber is sometimes classified as 'Pictish', along with other P-Celtic terms such as pert 'wood, copse', the ancestor of modern Welsh perth 'bush, copse'.
