- [Map of the Highland clans that rebelled in 1715](https://dictionary.scot/outlander/map-of-the-highland-clans/): The Jacobite risings of 1689, 1708, 1715 and 1719 form the historical backdrop to the early Outlander books. The final and most fierce rising in 1745 forms part of the plots of Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager. Clan Fraser of Lovat is the principal branch of Clan Fraser, to which the character Jamie Fraser is related. The Frasers of Lovat have been strongly associated with Inverness and the surrounding area since the Clan’s founder gained lands there in the thirteenth century. - [Map of the Battle of Culloden, 1746](https://dictionary.scot/outlander/map-of-the-battle-of-culloden/): The Battle of Culloden, featuring prominently in the novels Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager, took place on 16 April 1746 near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. An exhausted Jacobite army under Charles Edward Stuart (‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’) was decisively defeated by the British government force under the Duke of Cumberland. The lost battle and the brutal reprisals that followed were effectively the end of the Jacobite rising of 1745 and of the Jacobite cause. The reprisals affected the real Simon Fraser (11th Lord Lovat, known as ‘The Fox’ and the grandfather of Jamie Fraser’s character in the Outlander novels) who fought with the Jacobites and was captured after the battle. It is different from: Our regional labels identify words, spellings and meanings which are used only or mainly in certain parts of Scotland. The map above shows all the Scottish regions we refer to. Together, these areas define the four traditional dialect regions of Scots, i.e.  We also use western highlands and islands and ulster to identify Scots forms found there.

- [Using this dictionary](https://dictionary.scot/scots-english/using-this-dictionary-se/): The Essential Scots-English Dictionary provides meanings in English for 9,500 Scots words and phrases.  There are three ways to access the dictionary entries: Some dictionary entries, like that for hantle, show a single spelling and a single meaning. Other entries are more complicated.  Audio guides are provided for around 1,100 words with a tricky or hard-to-guess pronunciation. Click on the symbol to hear the sound.
